Phuket Province consists of 26 islands, with Phuket Island being the largest. Situated in the Indian Ocean, Phuket is 867 kilometers from Bangkok. The province has an area of about 543 square kilometers and Phuket Island alone covers an area of 538 square kilometers, running 48 kilometers from north to south and 21 kilometers from east to west. The province has a population of nearly 300,000 and governs 3 counties and 17 districts.

Phuket Island is mostly hilly with plains accounting for about 35% of the total land area. The climate is hot and humid, with the average temperature as high as 35.5℃ and average annual rainfall of 2,540 mm. Phuket Island is endowed with abundant resources and is reputed as a “Treasure Island” where tin mines boast an annual production of 30,000 tons of tin. Though its scanty farmland can hardly produce enough grain for self-sufficiency, there are rubber and coconut plantations and tropical fruit orchards everywhere.

Phuket is known for its marine products such as fish, shrimps, crabs and shellfish. Its industrial sector focuses on electric, electronic and tourist  products. In addition, there are factories specializing in the production of plastics, fish bone powder and canned fish.

As early as the 1970s, the Thai government designated Phuket Island for tourism development. At present, the island is dotted with high-grade hotels, tourist companies and restaurants featuring a wide variety of cuisines. Famous tourist attractions include Patong Beach, Kata and Karon Beach, Nai Yang Beach. With fine grains of white sand, a quiet environment, lush coconut palms and clear water, these beaches are ideal for leisure and water sports.

Phuket is home to many overseas Chinese, most of whom have their origin in Fujian. As a result, the Fujian Chinese Association is the most powerful local Chinese association, followed by Chaozhou Chinese Association, Hainan Chinese Association, Canton Chinese Association and Hakka Chinese Association.
